Joseph Billings was born 9 July 1824 at Sheshequin, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania.2,3,4,5,6 He married Jane Eliza Towner, daughter of Leonard Towner and Julia Dewey, 2 November 1845 at La Salle Co., Illinois.7 He died 22 October 1898 at Randall, Jewell Co., Kansas.6 He was buried at Randall Cemetery, Randall, Jewell Co., Kansas.6
At one time it was thought Joseph had served in the Civil War in the Iowa Regiment, however, that individual was Joseph M. Billings of Mahaska Co., Iowa, age 21 when he enlisted in 1862. He mustered out in 1865. Our Joseph was buying and selling land in Mills Co., Iowa from about 1852 through 1864. The last transaction was made from LaSalle Co., Illinois in 1864.
Joseph was a farmer, buying and selling several pieces of land in and around LaSalle Co, Ill. During the first town meeting of Ophir Township, he was elected as the Highway Commissioner. Joseph and his wife were among the nine original members of the United Brethren Church established in Mendota in 1875.8,9,10,11,12
