Robert started his medical study under the tutelage of his father. He later went to New York and entered the practice of Dr. Valentine Mott, and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York. He moved to Holmdel in July 1820 where he spent the rest of his life in medical practice.
He was a very serious student of his profession and kept himself thoroughly informed of the progress and development of medicine that was the object, aim, and ambition of his life. He served the Medical Society of Monmouth as Secretary (1825-6, 1831-5), Treasurer (1841-2), Vice President (1828, 1843), and President (1838, 1844). In 1836 he was also appointed as the first postmaster when the post office was established in Holmdel.
He had an extensive practice for many years and was obviously very skilled in his profession. At his funeral an immense gathering of substantial citizens came from across the county and filled the church.10
