Noah Washburn was baptized 15 June 1740 at Plimpton, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.3,2,1,5,6 He married Bathsheba Sexton, daughter of Charles Sexton and Bathsheba Geer, 14 November 1765 at Hartford, Connecticut.7 He died 7 August 1811 at Hartford.8,7,9,10,11,12,13,14 He was buried at Old North Cemetery, Hartford, Connecticut.8

Proof that Noah Washburn of Hartford is one and the same as Noah Washburn baptized in Plymouth, son of Edward and Judith is substantial, but indirect. Here is my analysis.

Barbour (Families of Early Hartford:635) states Noah died in 1814. However, this is in error as no less than five Connecticut newspapers, his probate file, and burial record very clearly indicate he died 7 Aug 1811.

The 1811 date is critical to identifying him as the son of Edward Washburn (generation 5). The newspaper mortuary notices all state he was 71 which is precisely the right age for Noah to be Edward’s son, baptized in 1740. The Hale record of burials at Old North Cemetery reads that Noah was 72, but that is a typed transcript of notes taken from a variety of sources (see the title page) and it cannot be said with certainty which source was used to determine the age. The mortuary notices are all consistent, and represent a short “chain of communication” from the family.

The onomastic evidence is also supportive as Noah did name at least three children after his older siblings: Sarah, Eleazer, who died when Noah was a young man, not yet married, in 1764, and John. A fourth child, Hephizibah, could be named for his father’s sister.

Three of Noah’s 5 siblings are known to have lived and died in Connecticut (along with their father, Edward). Except for Noah, they remained in Middletown. Although I have yet to find any record associating Noah with them other than their birth and baptism records (given in MF 15:95; MF 12:263; & MF 9:40), there also does not appear to be any conflicting evidence. There were others named Noah Washburn born between 1735 and 1745, but they are all accounted for: none have a record showing Edward as his father, none are associated with the other siblings, and none have a stated or calculated birth date in 1740 as does Noah Washburn of Hartford.8,7,15,16

Noah Washburn left a will dated 3 December 1804 at Hartford and proved 5 Sep 1811:

I Noah Washburn of the town of Hartford in the county of Harford, being in a comfortable state of Bodily Health and of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and Testament
