Mary Bouton was born about 24 July 1750 at South Salem, Westchester Co., New York.1 She married Abiel Sherman 15 November 1767 at Salem, Westchester Co., New York.2,3 She died 2 November 1840 at Nassau, Rensselaer Co., New York, aged 90 yr, 3 mo, 9 da.1 She was buried at Nassau-Shodack Cemetery, Nassau, Rensselaer Co., New York.1

Probably not a daughter of John5 and Mary (Pettit) Bouton. Although suggested in the 1998 TAG article, Abiel Sherman was a Revolutionary War pensioner, and his pension file includes statements that he had married Mary Bouten 15 Nov 1767 at South Salem, New York and that she died 2 Nov 1840. Salem Church records show christenings for 14 children of Abiel Sherman between 1767 and 1791. Mary, born in 1732, would be too old to fit this chronology. It's also now reported that she married Reuben Knapp and died 14 Mar 1750.

Alternatively, Mary (Bouten) Sherman could be a last, unrecorded child of John and Mary, born (as calculated) in July 1750 just after the death of Mary (Bouton) Knapp. Mary (Pettit) Bouton was certainly not too old to have another child in 1750, and the younger Mary might have been named for her deceased older sister. John and Mary (Pettit) Bouton, moved from Stamford to Pound Ridge sometime between 1747 and 1752 and the move could explain why the birth of Mary is unrecorded.

Gary Boughton also suggests that there was another Bouton family in the Southbury-Woodbury area of Connecticut, that also moved to New York in this same time period, and that Mary (Bouten) Sherman could be their daughter.4
