Lt General William Wynyard was born 20 June 1759.2 He died 11 July 1819.2

The 23rd November 1775 this officer was appointed to an Ensigncy, and 12th June 1777 to a Lieutenantcy in the 64th. He embarked for America early in 1776, and until 1783 served in North America, South Carolina, and the West Indies, four years of which in the light infantry under Colonels Abercrombie, Maitland, and Thomas Dundas. He did duty with the rifle party formed from the different companies, afterwards with the mounted detachment, and as Adjutant to the 2nd battalion. He was severely wounded in the battle of Brandywine; he served at the siege of Charlestown, and was in all the actions in which the corps were engaged. In September 1780 he was appointed Brigade Major, and in that capacity served with Generals Leslie, O'Hara, and Leland in New York, South Carolina, and the West Indies till July 1783, when he was placed on half-pay. The 3rd March 1782 he had been appointed to a Company in the 74th, and in 1787 from half-pay to a full company in the 41st.

The 13th October 1790 he was appointed Lieutenant and Adjutant in the Coldstream guards, and as such served in Flanders from February 1793 till April 1795, when he succeeded to a Company in the latter regiment, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was present at the sieges of Valenciennes and Landrecy; battles of St. Amand, Famars, Lincelles, Dunkirk, Cateau, Tournay, &c. He acted as Aid-de-Camp to the Duke of York, and officiated as Judge Advocate to the British army. In the rank of Lieutenant Colonel he served as Brigade Major General in the South West District, from June 1795 till January 1799, when he was appointed Deputy Adjutant General; and while serving in that capacity did duty us Quarter Master General, during the absence in Holland of Lieutenant General Sir David Dundas, and held at the same time the command of the 2nd battalion of the Coldstream.

The 2nd April 1802 he received the brevet of Colonel; was appointed Colonel of the Royal West India Rangers 25th October 1806 ; Major General 25th October 1809 ; Colonel of the 5th foot 7th November 1812; and 4th June 1814 Lieutenant General and in the same year was appointed to the command of the Northern District of England.3
