Mary Hewitt was born in 1760.3 She married Caleb Bentley, son of George Bentley and Ruth Barber, 27 November 1782 at Little Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., New York.1,3,4 She died 18 November 1840 at Albany Co., New York.5,3 She was buried at Center Berlin Cemetery, Berlin, Rensselaer Co., New York.6,7

There is no contemporary evidence that I have found to substantiate the claim that Mary Hewitt is the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Babcock) Hewitt. Joseph and Sarah seem to have been have been the only ones Hewitts in the area, and Mary's maiden name is given in her pension claim. Soule (MFIP) refers back to the Alden (p. 599) book, but that reference does not include the children of that couple. The published accounts all seem to point back to the Cheesebrough Genealogy, and that book does not give any hints as to the sources used. Caleb and Mary did not use any family names for their children.2,8,9,10,1
