Joseph How was born 9 April 1661 at Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.2,1 He married Dorothy Martin, daughter of Thomas Martin and Johanna (---), 29 December 1687 at Marlborough, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.2 He died 4 September 1701 at Marlborough.3,1

Joseph How died intestate and in 1718 the estate was distributed when the last surviving child had come of age. Samuel and Dorothy Morris then living on a farm near Woodstock in the county of New London in Connecticut. For £98 "of currant passable mony of New England" quitclaimed all their rights in the estate of Joseph How late of the town of Marlborough in New England" including a deed of sale of 25 acres of land lying in Marlborough on both sides of the river near the cornmill. The remaining heirs signed a release the same day. They included Jeremiah Barstown, Sarah Barstow, Thomas Amsden, Eunice Amsden, Joseph How, and Bethiah How.

The distribution was made in 7 parts, two parts to the eldest son Joseph. The total value was estimated at £1,442 amongst lands at Marlborough, Lancaster, and Westborough. The original inventory in 1701 did not mention any land other than that in Marlborough and totaled only £655.
