Thomas Barber, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), was born in 1644.1 He died at Suffield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, 25 July 1689.2,3

Thomas married Ann Chase, daughter of Aquila Chase and Ann Wheeler, at Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, 24 April 1671.4,1,5,6

Thought to be a son of John Barber, who was probably first in Salem and later of West Springfield, Massachusetts. Another son of John, known as John Jr., appears in Suffield (just a few miles south of Springfield at the same time as Thomas, though there does not seem to be any interaction between the two in the records.

Thomas was in Gloucester by 1662, removed about 1669 to Newbury, and then to Suffield in 1674. At the time, Suffield (or Southfield) was in Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, in an area which was later transferred to Connecticut.5,1,3

Thomas Barber was granted 50 acres in Suffield by the Committee for Suffiled Plantation, 17 Jul 1674. They granted 40 acres to his twin sons, Joseph and Benjamin, 19 May 1679, "Provided: that the father Tho Barber, pay & discharge all Rates & charges that shall arise upoin this Alotmt fro tyme to tyme, till they come of age, & the Grant is to them both if they live to Injoy it & in case of death, then the surviver to have the whole."7

Anna Barber presented the inventory of his estate to the Hampshire Co. court, probably 30 March 1690, showing £95-02-00 in personal and real property, and debts of £55-08-04, and net "remaining free," £39-13-04.

She had already bound out her son, Aquila, as an apprentice because Thomas' estate was said to be "of little value."8
