Lorenzo Dow Wilson, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), was born at Vermont, November 1825. The place of birth could also be New Hampshire or the finger lakes region of New York--the records vary.1,2,3,4,5 He died after 1900.6

Lorenzo married Mary Mildred Norman, daughter of Solomon Norman and Indian (---), at Caldwell Co., Kentucky, 2 September 1852.7

He was named for a famous preacher of the day, Lorenzo Dow (seehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_Dow).

His parentage is not yet known. Census records show he was born in New York, New Hampshire, or Vermont, but all reflect 1825 as the year of birth. In 1880 he was a shoemaker, but in 1860 and 1870 he's shown as a farmer. His name is obviously not a family name, and one of the most common first names to be found in the 1850 census.

His granddaughter, Lula, related some stories of what she knew of Lorenzo's heritage, that he was half Indian, and one instance where he missed the land of the lakes, and another that the Indians had blue eyes. These references possibly point to the finger lakes area of New York and the Iroquois where many had blue eyes because of intermarriage with the English.

He was said to be a strange hard man who made shoes and saddles. One story is that on a very cold winter's day he was doing his leather work in the house, but the kids were getting on his nerves. He banished the children out doors and barred the door. His neighbors found out about it, but respected his hard dispostion so much that they went as a body to tell him that if he put the kids out again that they were going to get a court order out for him. "He backed down from no one."

Rose Nemeth recalled also that her father remembered him, and hated the shoes his grandfather made for him. He couldn't wear them out and they were handed down from older siblings. He also spoke Cherokee to his family, though he may have learned it from his wife, whose father, Solomon Norman, also spoke it and is said to have first married an Indian.8,9,10
