Leonard Manfield, son of William Manfield and Elizabeth (---), was born in 1741.1 He died before 26 March 1829,1 when he was buried at Thirkleby, Yorkshire, England.1

Leonard married Molly Barker, daughter of Thomas Barker and Hannah Bruce, at Sessay, Yorkshire, England, 24 March 1794.2

The baptism record of his son Leonard is somewhat remarkable for the genealogical data it provides:

"Leonard 4th son and 5th child of Leornard Manfield, Farmer, of Thirkleby in this parish (son of the late William Manfield, farmer, of the same place by Elizabeth his wife) by Mary his wife, daughter of Thomas Barker of Sessay farmer by Hannah his wife. born 30 March bapt 1st April" [1812].1

Leonard Manfield left a will dated 22 February 1828, and proved 9 May 1829:

This is the last Wil and Testament of me Leonard Manfield of Thirkleby in the County of York Yeoman made this twenty second day of February one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight in mannner following (that is to say)

In the first place I [___] and direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary charges and expences shall be fully paid and [____] by my Executors hereinafter named and appointed as soon as conveniently may be after my decease.

I give and devise all my Real Estate hereditaments and premises with the appurtenances situate and being at Hutton Sessay in the said County of York unto and to the use of my son William Manfield his heirs and assigns forever subject nevertheless to and charged and chargeable with the payments and [____] hereinafter mentioned (that is to say)

with the payment of the sum of one hundred and seventy five pounds to my son George Manfield

To my son Thomas Manfield the sum of Eight hundred and fifty pounds

To my daughter Elizabeth the sum of Two hundred pounds

To my daughter Mary the sum of Two hundred pounds

and to my son Leonard Manfield the sum of one hundred and seventy five pounds

all which said sums respectively I direct shall be paid to them at the expiration of twelve calendar months after my decease except to my said son Leonard and his share to be paid to him when he attains the age of twenty one years with reasonable interest for the same to be appropriated to or for his use in the meantime

And also charged and chargeable with the payment of the annuity or yearly sum of Forty eight pounds unto my dear wife for and during the term of her natural life for her own absolute use by two equal half yearly payments in each and every year and the first of such payments to begin and and be made at the expiration of Eighteen Calendar months next after my decease

and from and after the decease of my said wife I charge and make chargeable to my said Real estate hereditaments and premises so given and devised to my said son William Manfield with the payment of the further Two hundred pounds to my said son George, the sum of Two hundred pounds to my said daughter Elizabeth, the sum of Two hundred pounds to my said son Thomas, the sum of Two hundred pounds to my said daughter Mary and the sum of Two hundred pounds to my said son Leonard

I give and bequeath all my Farming stock crops implements of Husbandry and Dairy utensils in and about my Farms and premises and also my Household furniture plate linen and china (except so much and such part and parts thereof as will comfortably furnish two Rooms which I give to my said wife) unto my son the said Leonard Manfield his Executors administrators and assigns forever

and all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever I give the same unto and equally between and among all my said sons and daughters (except my said son William)

and I nominate constitue and appoint my said sons William and George joint Executors of this my will and hereby declare and direct that they or either of them shall not be answerable or accountable for any loss misfortune or injury which may arise or happen to my said Estate monies and premises if the same do not arise or happen by or through their or either of their respective wilful neglect or default

And I hereby revoke and make void all and every former and other will & wills by me at any time heretofore made

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first hereinbefore mentioned Leod Manfield

Signed sealed published and declared by the said Leonard Manfield the Testator as and for his last will and Testament in the presence of us who at his request in his presence and the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto George Barker, Crispin Toes, Leonard Metcalf.3
