Sergeant Francis Nichols, son of John Nichols and Joan (---), was born probably shortly before his baptism at Sedgeberrow, Worcestershire, England, 25 May 1575.1 He died at Stratford, Connecticut, before 8 January 1650/51, when his estate was inventoried.1

Francis married (1) Frances Wimarke, daughter of Robert Wimarke, at Sedgeberrow, 24 January 1599/0;1,2 he married (2) Ann Wines, daughter of Barnabas Wines and Anna Eddy, about 1649.1,2

He was among the very first settlers of Stratford. The General Court on 10 October 1639 directed, "Mr Governor and Mr. Wells to confer with the planters at Pequannocke [Stratford], to give them the oath of Fidelity, make such free as they see fit, order them to send one or two deputies to the General Courts in September and April, and for deciding of differences and controversies under 40 s. among them, to propound to them and give them power to choose 7 men from among themselves, with liberty of appeal to the Court here; as also to assign Sergeant Nicholls for the present to train the men and exercise them in military discipline."

Given his responsibility, he probably had military experience before immigrating.
