There are no records of land transfers or other traces of Thomas and Sarah in Essex County, Massachusetts other than the register at Gloucester of the births of the first five children. They probably moved out to some remote section before going to New Jersey. Thomas is said to have moved there between 1685 and 1688, but there is no known evidence of those dates.

On 6 Nov 1698, Thomas was deeded 110 acres and called a weaver. He is said to have been at the Pittsgrove Baptist Church in 1701.

He was called a carpenter of Piles Grove Precinct when he made his will dated 25 Apr 1706 and signed by mark. He named his wife Sarah, son Samuel Alewell; three daughters, Sarah Walling, Mary Nichols, and Elizabeth Alewell, son Thomas, son William, son John, son-in-law Thomas Walling. The inventory was dated 27 May 1706.8
