Jonas Mills Smith, son of David Smith and Martha Mills, was born at Smithtown, Suffolk Co., New York, 14 March 1779.1 He died 8 March 1848.1

Jonas married (1) Joanna Mapes, daughter of James Mapes and Deliverance Mapes;1 he married (2) Sarah Ask, daughter of Samuel Ask and Esther (…).1

"Jonas was a captain of a passenger vessel crossing the Sound, and became acquainted with his second wife when she had to make somewhat frequent trips in his vessel."2
