John Towner, son of Richard Towner and Mary (…), was born at Sussex, England, about 1685.1 He died at Derby, Connecticut, after 1741.1

John married Jane French, daughter of Francis French and Lydia Bunnell, at Derby 13 November 1707.1

John went to the part of Derby Township which later became Oxford and settled there. He was there in 1718 and rated on the tax list at 48 pounds sterling. Volume 8, page 394, colonial records states that "John Towner in 1741 was in the northwest part of Derby, then called Derby Woods." His name is signed to a petition for "Society Privileges," which was presented to the General Court of Connecticut in 1740. This is on file in the state library at Hartford, Connecticut.1
