Elisha Walling, son of Thomas Walling and Sarah Elwell, was born at Cohansey, Cumberland Co., New Jersey, 26 July 1708.1 He died at Henry Co., Virginia, about 1783.2

Elisha married Mary Blevins, whose parents are not known (or are untraced), about 1729.3

He left New Jersey, possibly to avoid being bound into a trade as required by the codicil to his father's will. He first appears in the Monocasy, Prince George's (now Frederick) Co., Maryland records in 1733 with his brothers James and William. By 1745 he is in Lunenburg Co., Virginia where he patented 400 acres on Cherrystone Creek. In 1746 he patented land on the Irwin and Smith Rivers about 2 miles east of the present town of Martinsville (now Henry Co., Virginia). He was appointed constable of the western part of old Lunenburg County (today's Patrick and Henry counties) in 1748.

It has yet to be proved that his wife was actually Mary Blevins, daughter of William Blevins, although this is certainly the family legend. It was his son Elisha who now appears to have been the long hunter Elisha Walling, not Elisha Sr. His other sons were also on the long hunts. Three of them, James, Joseph, and Thomas, are on the list compiled for Herbert's company in Lord Dunmore's War. Elisha Sr. signed the oath of allegience in 1777 in Henry Co., Virginia and was reimbursed for supplying the troops.
