William Worden, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), was born before 1514.1 He died about 1574.1

William Worden was of Clayton, Lancashire, and appears in the Preston Guild Rolls as an out-Burgess for the years 1542 and 1562. A burgess was a "freeman who had been received into, and admitted to the privileges of a borough; someone having full municipal rights; a citizen." An out-Burgess was one who lived out of town; an in-Burgess lived in the town.

The 1542 roll shows William with his two sons, William and Robert. The 1562 roll has only the father and son Robert. The son William is presumed deceased by this date.2

The Manor Court of Clayton met 26 Nov 1674 to determine the inheritance of William's holdings:
And that William Werden who held of the Lord of Clayton aforesaid certain lands and tenaments in Clayton aforesaid for a rent of (- - - -) a year, died since the last court, and that Robert Worden is his son and next heir and is aged 40 years or thereabouts but by what service the jury know not.3
