ChartsAncestors of Edward Ambrose Cooke
Elizabeth Stoughton, daughter of Reverend Thomas Stoughton and Katherine (…), was born say 1595.1 She died at Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts, about March 1647.2

Elizabeth married (1) John Scudder, son of Henry Scudder and Elizabeth (…), at Maldon, Essex, England, 1613;2 she married (2) Robert Chamberlain, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), at Strood, Kent, England, 30 April 1627.2

It appears that after death of her second husband in 1639, Elizabeth followed her son John, and brothers, Thomas and Israel Stoughton to New England. She was certainly here by 6 Oct 1644 when as Mestres Chamberlin, she joined Rev. John Lothrop's church at Barnstable. On 14 May 1645, the Massachusetts Bay General Court referred to her as Mrs Chamberlin, widowe, sister to Mr Israell Stoughton, considering "weighty reasons moveing," to allow her either a cow or £5.

The inventory of her estate was filed 30 Mar 1647, and divided in two parts, one for the son and one for the daughter. This is somewhat odd in that there were sons and two married daughters yet living in New England at the time.3
