Thomas Newberry is perhaps the son of Richard Newberry and Grace Matthew, baptized at Yarcombe, Devon, England, 10 November 1594.1,2 He died at Windsor, Connecticut, about January 1635/36.3

Thomas married (1) Joane Dabinott, daughter of Christopher Dabinott, at England, before 1619;2,4 he married (2) Jane Dabinot, daughter of John Dabinott, at England, before 1632.2

Thomas' ancestry is disputed. J. Gardner Bartlett thought he was the Thomas Newberry baptized at Yarcombe, Devon, England, 10 Nov 1594, son of Richard and Grace (Matthew) Newberry. Ancestral Roots (7th ed.) cites Bartlett when including this line (#253). The 8th ed. shows a revised line, with additional citations. Roberts does not include the line, nor does Richardson. Anderson shows the Yarcombe baptism as belonging to this Thomas Newberry, but notes there is a file of correspondence (R. Stanton Avery Special Collections, New England Historic Genealogical Society) between Bartlett and a Herald of the College of Arms in which the two could not agree as to Thomas' parentage.5,2,6,7,8,9

31 March 1633, Thomas Newberry appears on a list of "Planters carrying with them household goods, clothing and provisions for themselves, their wives, children and servants, valued at £920 and allowed to pass free of custom by his Majesty's patent, to be shipped on the Recovery of London, Mr Gabriel Cornish, from Weymouth to New England."10
