John Thompson, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), was born about 1610.1 He died at East Haven, Connecticut, in 1655.1,2,3

John married Dorothy (…), whose parents are not known (or are untraced), say 1639.1,3,2,4

John Thompson was of East Haven, commonly styled "farmer" in the records, and apparently not related to the Thompson brothers of New Haven. Various early published accounts (including Dod's East Haven Register and the Tuttle Genealogy (1883) ) call his wife Ellen, but the proprietors' records (2:185) show her name to be Dorothy. County court records, including the probate file, refer to her only as the widow, without naming her. Two of her children, Rebecca (Thompson) Thomas and Nathaniel Harrison, named a child Dorothy.

John's estate was inventoried in 1655 (citing New Haven Probate records, 1:58). His widow was unmarried in February 1656 (Proprietors' Records (2:185), but married Thomas Harrison of Branford and by him had two sons.

She probably did not survive much longer, for Thomas Harrison married his second wife on 29 March 1666.

On 27 January 1671, the children of John Thompson, farmer, deceased, applied for the distribution of their father's estate, referring to Thomas Harrison as the custodian. Named were John, the eldest son, Joseph, Hannah, Mary, Rebeckah, Abigaile, and Sarah; with Mathew Moulthrop and Johnn Cooper, Jr., acknowledging the receipt of their wives' portions. (citing New Haven County Court Records, 1:36).3
