John Crane, son of John Crane, was born at Newark, Essex Co., New Jersey, in 1671.1 He died at Whippany, Morris Co., New Jersey, 22 February 1739, age 68 and was buried in the Whippany Graveyard, Whippany, Morris Co., New Jersey.2,3
John married Mary (…), whose parents are unknown (or not traced).3
In 1719, John Crane was chosen assessor and collector of taxes and served for several years.
He was overseer of the poor and sheepmaster in 1725, and in 1736, appointed to record strays.
For many years he was assessor and ratemaker; tithingman in 1735, and chosen for a committee to agree with the Rev. Aaron Bur, November 1736.
His will mentions a wife Mary, but she remains unidentified, nor is it determined if she is the mother of his children.2,4
John left a will dated 2 January 1734, and proved 16 Mar 1738/9:
The inventory, totaling £166.03.07, was made by Ephraim Price and John
Ball, 14 May 1739. Witnesses—Stephen Ward, Abigail Ward.4
