John Cooper, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), was born at Olney, Buckinghamshire, England, about 1594.1,2 He died at Southampton, Suffolk Co., New York, after 6 May 1662, when he wrote his will.3,4
John married, as her 2nd husband, Wibroe Griggs, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), at Olney, 18 October 1618.3,5
John and his family sailed for New England on the Hopewell, 1 April 1635. The ships register records him as being from Olney, co. Buckingham, Eng., aged 41, along with wife Wibroe, 42; children Mary, 13, John 10, Thomas, 7, and Martha, 5.
He was made freeman at Boston, 6 Dec 1636 and then settled in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he was one of the elders of the church. He was one of the twenty heads of families who formed an association to settle Southampton, Long Island in 1639.
He wrote his will 6 May 1662 and mentioned the children of Henry Pierson; Thomas, son of Thomas Topping; Sarah, daughter of John Topping; his son John Cooper's children; son Thomas Cooper's children; daughter White's children; daughter Cook's children; son Henry Pierson, daughter White, and daughter Cook; and gave a barrel of beef to Mr Woster of Merrimack or (if not living) to his eldest son by his first wife. His estate was inventoried at nearly £375-00-00.6,7
