John Houchin, son of Edward Houchin and Hannah (…), was born say 1725.1 He died before 1793.2

John married Martha Orford, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), before 1750.3,4,5

John Houchin is first noticed in the records of Amherst Co., Virginia when on 19 February 1768, he made a mortgage to Spiers & Co., Edinburg, Scotland for the land "he now lives on," that being on the branches of Harris's Creek in Graham's Cove, Amberst Co. He also pledged three feather beds and furniture, four breeding sows, six barrows of a year old each, nineteen piggs makred with a cross and two slits in the left ear and one slit in the right ear, one gray mare branded with an 'O' on near buttock five years old, and one dark bay horse about ninie years old, his brand, and one pen knife. He later renewed this loan from Alexander Spier & Co., Merchants of Glasgow, North Brittain and further pledged "one old Felt Hatt."

7 November 1768, he purchased 95 acres from from Ambrose Rucker for £5 and several more parcels over the next few years, the last one being 200 acres on the north banks of the Piney River from Bartholomew Ramsey.

In 1775, John and son Edward, along with several other residents of Amherst Co., signed a petition to the Virginia Asswmbly requesting a ferry on the Fluvanna River on the road to Bedford Court House.

Land records of Amherst Co., indicate a transfer of 318 acres to Benjamin Wright about 1785, and a deed of 1793 is annotated that William Houchin "his heir" had delivered the original deed to Richard Harrison, an attorney of Amerhst Co.3
