On 19 March 1584/85, Thomas Whetcombe "entered on 4 ft. of land in the north part of the garden of a tenement in the tithing of Extra Portam [i.e. outside the East gate], formerly of Nicholas Hille, in which William Bole now lives, by grant of Thomas Pope senior, to attract the rest of the tenement of the said Thomas Pope, on condition that Johanna daughter of the said Thomas Pope, hold the same for life if the said Johanna and Thomas Whitcombe survive the said Thomas Pope, but the grant to be void if Thomas Whitcombe die before he marry the said Johanna."2
