Samuel W. Smith, son of Gilbert Smith and Mary (…), was born about 1765.1 He died 23 March 1828.2

Samuel married Sarah Smith, daughter of William Smith and Catharine Smith.1

Samuel left a will dated 30 November 1823, and proved 29 Apr 1828 which mentions:
his wife, Sally, and her brother, William Smith;
sons, Thomas W., of Smithtown, William, then of age,
daughter, Patience M. McColly,
daughter, SallyAnn Smith,
sons Samuel, Richard, Charles B., and Matthew F.
A quarter acre of his farm was to be kept for a family burial ground.

The farm was at Indian Head, Smithtown, and the ground taken was near the road, somewhat north of the house. The gravestone of the testator was found there recently, although it had fallen and was covered. It is probable that no other stone was ever erected on that ground, although another burial was made there many years later, a great grandchild of Samuel W. Smith. Soon after 1828 the farm was sold and became the property of Samuel Paul Smith.3
