Richard Comyn, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), died between 1176 and 1182, when his widow remarried.1

Richard married Hextilda, daughter of Huctred, of Tynedale and Bethoc, about 1145.2

The Comyn pedigree was corrected in vol 9 of the Scots Peerage:
"All that can safely be said is probably this: the first of the family known in Scotland was William the Chancellor. He had three nephews, sons of a brother whose name is uncertain . . .

"This Richard and his wife Hextilda had certainly four sons, John William, Odinell, and Simon and probably a fifth son David, and from them the various Scots families of the name appear to be descended."3
