James Gardner, son of Richard Gardner and Sarah Shattuck, was born at Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, 19 May 1664.1 He died at Nantucket Co., Massachusetts, 1 August 1723.2

James married (1) Mary Starbuck, daughter of Nathaniel Starbuck and Mary Coffin, at Nantucket Co., about 1684;3 he married (2), as her 2nd husband, Rachel Gardner, daughter of John Gardner and Priscilla Grafton, at Nantucket Co., about 1700;3,4 he married (3) Patience Harker, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), at Nantucket Co., about 1710;5 he married (4) Mary Coffin, daughter of James Coffin and Mary Severance, at Nantucket Co., about 1720.6

James left a will dated 28 July 1723, and proved 14 Nov 1723 naming:
wife Mary,
Sons Samuel, Jethro, Barnabas, Jonathan, James
Daughters Elizabeth Gorham and Mehetable Gardner
Executors to be sons Jethro, Barnabas, Jonathan and James.7
