John Worth, son of William Worth and Sarah Macy, was born at Nantucket, Nantucket Co., Massachusetts, 19 May 1666.1,2 He died at Edgartown, Dukes Co., Massachusetts, 11 February 1732.3,2

John married (1) Miriam Gardner, daughter of Richard Gardner and Sarah Shattuck, at Nantucket, 22 September 1684;4,2,5 he married (2) Anna Platts, 8 September 1704;2 he married (3) Dorcas Smith at Nantucket Co., Massachusetts, 22 December 1724. The ancestry of the last two wives is unknown (or not traced here).4,2

After his first wife died (1702) John removed to Marthas Vineyard. There he married twice more. He was a prominent and respected citizen, and inn-holder, and was appointed Associate Justice of the County Court in 1713.6,2,7

John left a will dated 7 December 1730, and proved 7 March 1731/2 (paragraphing added for clarity:
In the Name of God Amen: The seventh Day of December Anno Domini 1730: I John Worth of Edgartown in Dukes County In his Majestys Province of the Massachusets Bay in New England Gent. Calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is Appointed for all men once to Die do make & ordaine this & no other to be my last Will & Testament.

First of all I Recommend my soul unto the hands of God that Gave it & my body to the Grave to be burried in a Decent Christian Manner at the discression of my Executors; And Touching such outward Estate as it hath pleased God to Bless me with (after my funeral Charges & Just Debts be first Paid) I give & dispose of the Same in the following Manner,

First I give & Bequeath unto my son Nathaniel Worth the one halfe of the upper halfe of my house or house lot where I now dwell on which side he Pleases & one halfe of a share of Meadow on the isll of Chapaquidick that I had of Benjamin Smith late deceased and all my Meadow land that I have in [Ciackatnxith?] & halfe a share of land in Sachacontakett that I had of Capt Newcomb to my sd son Nathaniel & to the heirs of his body forever

I Likewise give To my son Nathaniel three heifers ten sheep & five lambs & my coat that is Trimmed with silver buttons And the Improvement of the lower half of my House lott & ye & my dwelling house barn garden & out housing standing Thereon until my son John arrive at the age of twenty one years he my said Son Nathaniel Keeping my sd house barn fences & out housing in good Repair during the time of his Improvement thereof

Item I give & bequeath unto my sons Nathaniel Richard William & Joseph all my lands & Meadow That I have in Sherburn in the County of Nantucket to their heirs equally Among my sd four sons and also I give unto my sd four sons my barn at Nantukett & all my wearing Apparell that I have not herein given equally amongst them

I give & Bequeath unto my son William Worth the other halfe of the Upper Halfe of my house lott in Edgartown aforsd & my Meadow at [ ] Neck that I Had of Capt Newcomb

Item I give & bequeath unto my sons Richard & Joseph all the meadow that I have at Manadoe which I had of Capt Newcomb equally Between them & five acres of land apiece at the North Part of Catainy in Edgartown aforsd Richards to Joyn to the land of Benjamin Pease & Josephs to Joyn to Richards.

I Like wise give unto my son Richard my bed that is In the house that was my fathers at Nantukett aforesd in the Chamber with all the Furniture belonging to it.

Item I give unto my son Jonathan Worth deceased Sons viz John, Christopher & Jonathan three acres of land Apiece at [ ] aforsd Johns to Joyne to the five Acres given to Joseph Christophers to Johns & Jonathan to Christophers to Extend from the head fence to the harbor

I give & bequeath unto my son John my welling house and the Lower half of My house lot adjoining to the harbor in Edgartown aforsd, with all the houseing fences & Appurtenances & my Land Meadow & interest at Cashoag & Chapaquidick & [ ] aforsd Except what I have given to my other Children with al my lands & Meadow wheresoever & whatsoever but not to have the Improvement of any part Thereof until he arrive unto the age of twenty one years. But if my sd son John Should Dye without Issue before he arrive to ye sd Ages that then my will is That all the lands & Real Estate given him I hereby give unto my Sons Nathanael Richard William Joseph Equally Among them They my sd sons paying [my daughters] Sarah & Dorcas equally one hundred and fifty pounds apiece or to their heirs then surviving but if my sd son should Refuse to pay sd Money that then my Will is that all my lands & Real Estate above given to my son John to be to their heirs then surviving

I likewise give unto my son John my Gun Great Bible two silver spoons & the silver cup that hath but one handle.

Item I give & bequeath unto my former wife Anne's [Geaerd] Children vizt. To John & Samuel Stanbridge the Value of Twenty five pounds & 10 pence now in the hands of their father Moses Belcher of Branbery & three pounds out of my personal Estate equally between them & to Abigail Little & [Susan?] Little forty two pounds eighteen shillings & ten pence Now Due to me on book from the Estate of their father Samuel Little late Deceased & Seven pounds two shillings & two pence out of my personal Estate

Item I Give unto my Daughters Judy & Mary & to my grand daughter Meriam Clark twenty shillings apiece They having had what I intended to give them

Item I give & bequeath unto my daughters Sarah & Dorcas all my Personall Esate of all sorts both within Doords & without & [debts?] equally between them & the Improvement of all my lands gain to my son John until he be twenty one years of age Except what I have given my son Nathanael the Improvement . Except also what my Executors shall [Expend] out of my personal Estate for the bringing up my son John & my two daughters Sarah & Dorcas

Item I Likewise hereby give grant & bequeath unto my sons grandsons & daughters the several pieces of land whether upland or meadow as [ ] given to them & to the heirs of their bodys lineally descending from them Respectively with full power to make disposition to their heirs Respectively Descending from them or to the Male heirs of my Body Severally Descending but not to any other person or persons whatsoever forever.

I Likewise hereby make & Ordain Constitute & Appoint my son Nathanael Worth & my Brother in Law Benjamin Smith both of Edgartown aforesd to be my Executors to this my last will & Testament hereby revoaking all other & former Wills Ratefieing this and no other to be my last Will & Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand & affixed my seal the Day & Year first above written.
