Mathieu of Flanders, son of Thierry of Lorraine and Sybil of Anjou, was born about 1138.1 He died from wounds suffered at the Siege of Driencourt, France, 25 July 1173,1 and was buried at the Abbey of Saint-Josse-sur-Mer, France, in 1174.1

Mathieu married (1) Marie of England, Abbess of Romsey, Countess of boulogne, daughter of Stephen of Blois, King of England and Maud of Boulogne, in 1160;2 he married (2), as her 3rd husband, Éléonore de Vermandois, daughter of Raoul I, Count of Vermandois and Petronille, whose ancestry is not traced here, in 1170.1
