Samuel Pierce, son of David Pierce and Elizabeth Bowers, was born at Lunenburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, 25 March 1737.1 He died at Fitchburg, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, March 1798.2
Samuel married Mary Stewart, daughter of Solomon Stewart and Martha Farrington, at Lunenburg 19 March 1761.3
In 1790, his household was probably the one enumerated at Hallifax, Windham Co., Vermont, with 2 free white males over 16, 3 under 16, and 3 free white females.4
Samuel lived on Wanoosnoc Road in Fitchburg where he held some minor civic offices, and on 19 Apr 1775 was a member of Capt Ebenezer Woods' company, the second of the two companies that went to Lexington from Fitchburg.
On 23 Jun 1777 the town voted for Samuel Parse and six others to estimate the town's cost or contribution toward "the present war."
2 Oct 1791, while of Halifax, Windham Co., Vermont, he purchased land from Lemuel Fitch of Ransville, Albany Co., New York for $333.33 that was described as part of Original Lot number 25 estimated to be about 125 acres. Recorded same date, Windham Land Records, Book 2, p. 499 (FHL #28364).
He made his will 25 Feb 1798, naming his wife Mary, daughters Sally (wife of Jesse French, Polly (wife of John Bush), Patty; sons Samuel, Benjamin, Daniel, John, William, and Amasa. Amasa was also named executor. Made a Codicil 2 Mar 1798. Probated and proved 26 Apr 1798. A schedule of claims against the estate was presented 15 May 1798 and totaled 43-6-10 3/4. The inventory was presented 16 Jun 1798 and totaled $1,224.77. Recorded Windham Probate Vol 2, p. 132-5 & 140 (FHL #29138).
The widow's dower was set off to her 25 Apr 1805, and described as about 35 1/4 acres bounded by a line: "beginning at a stake of stones in the South line of said lot, and is the southwest corner of Adam Denison's land, and the southeast corner of the farm of the said deceased,
thence west eight and half degrees North eighteen rods to a stake & stones
thence North eight and half degrees east, one hundred and eighteen rods to a stake and stones
thence west eight and half degrees North two rods & twenty two links to a stake & stones
thence North eight & half degrees East two rods and links a little north of the Chimney in the House
thence East eight and half degrees South two rods and & twenty two links to a stake and stones
thence North eight degrees and half East five rods eighteen links to a stake & stones
thence west eight half degrees North seven rods and nineteen links to a stake of stones
thence North eight and half degrees East one hundred and thirytwo rods to a stake and stones in the North line of said original lot
thence east eight and half degrees south in said north line twenty five rods and nineteen links to a stake and stones which is the North west corner of the said Adam Denisons land
thence south eight and half degrees west two hundred and fifty eight rods to the place of beginning
containing about 35 1/4 acres and the southeasterly part of the house."
Mary would also have the priviledges of doing housework in the the kitchen, passing and repassing at the chamber & cellar, and to take fourteen feet of the whole width of westerly part of the barn and the priviledge of passing and repassing between the barn and dwelling.2
Samuel left a will dated 2 March 1798, and proved 26 Apr 1798. Codicil was dated 2 Mar.2
