Joseph Howe, son of Abraham Howe and Hannah Ward, was born at Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, 9 February 1661/62, "9 (12) mo."1,2,3 He died at Marlborough, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, 4 September 1701.4,3

Joseph married Dorothy Martin, daughter of Thomas Martin and Johanna (…), at Marlborough 29 December 1687.2,5

Joseph Howe died intestate and in 1718 the estate was distributed when the last surviving child had come of age. Samuel and Dorothy Morris were then living on a farm near Woodstock in the county of New London in Connecticut. For £98 "of currant passable mony of New England" they quitclaimed all their rights in the estate of "Joseph How late of the town of Marlborough in New England" including a deed of sale of 25 acres lying in Marlborough on both sides of the river near the cornmill. The remaining heirs signed a release the same day. They included Jeremiah Barstow, Sarah Barstow, Thomas Amsden, Eunice Amsden, Joseph How, and Bethiah How.

The distribution was made in 7 parts, two parts to the eldest son Joseph. The total value was estimated at £1,442 amongst lands at Marlborough, Lancaster, and Westborough. The original inventory in 1701 did not mention any land other than that in Marlborough and totaled only £655.

To Joseph, eldest son, two parts including:
the home place of 50 acres "whereon the mansion house stands with sd house & the rest of the buildings, fences, & orchards upon it;"
27 1/2 acres of woodland & swamp land lying at "adition hill;"
8 acres of woodland lying at wolf hill;
Rock meadow, which was a part of pond meadow;
one half of the lot of Cedar swamp granted to John Rudduck in a little swamp near Rock hill;
a fourteen acre town-right in the Marlborough the cow-commons;
a fifteen pound town right in Lancaster;
Joseph to pay £23 to sister Bethiah

To Abraham, the second son:
100 acres & 12 rods of land at pond meadow, including Upper Brook, Middle Brook, Lower Brook, and Horse meadows;
One quarter part of the lot of Cedar swamp granted to John Rudduck in a little swamp near Rock hill;
An eight acre town right in the Marlborough cow-commons
A nine pound town right in Lancaster
Abraham to pay £8 to sister Behiah and £1 to sister Sarah

To Jedidiah, the third son:
150 acres in Westborough;
All the meadows granted to John Rudduck in the three great meadows: Cold harbor, middle, and Chaney meadows;
41 acres westerly of Cold harbor, all in Westborough;
One quarter part of the lot of Cedar Swamp granted to John Rudduck in a Little swamp near Rock hill;
A seven acre town right in the Marlborough cow-commons;
A nine pound town right in Lancaster.

To Jeremiah Barstow, husband to Sarah the eldest daughter:
143 acres & 40 rods of land in Marlborough on either side of the Assabeth River on the east side of the road to Lancaster;
A piece of meadow on the northerly side of the Asabeth River, commonly called the upper pond at the river;
One third part of a lot of Cedar swamp granted upon right of John Rudduck in Chaney Swamp
A seven acre town right in the Marlborough cow-commons;
A nine pound town right in Lancaster.

To Thomas Amsden, husband to Eunice, the second daughter:
137 acres & 104 rods of land, all but 20 acres of that in Marlborough, 82 acres, 104 rods being on the south side of the Assabet River, 35 acres on the north. The remaining 20 acres was in Lancaster;
All the meadow on the Assabeth River that was granted to "John Rudduck for part of his ten acres of meadow there;"
One third part of a lot of Cedar swamp granted upon right of John Rudduck in Chaney Swamp;
A seven acre town right in the Marlborough cow-commons;
A nine pound town right in Lancaster;
One acre & 28 rods of land already granted but yet taken up in the Marlborough Cow Commons, Thomas to give Jeremiah Barstow & Bethiah Howe liberty to pass through his land "to get & cart their hay away from [their?] meadow".

To Bethiah, the third daughter:
The gristmill with all the utensils belonging to it;
120 acres & 40 rods of land, consisting of 53 acres & 40 rods in Marlborough, of which 38 acres & 40 rods were at the mill, on both sides of the Assabeth River, 25 acres of that being the same parcel the heirs of Joseph Howe purchased from Samuel Morris, and a final 67 acres in Lancaster in three parcels, 40, 17, and 10 acres each;
One third part of a lot of Cedar swamp granted upon right of John Rudduck in Chaney Swamp;
A seven acre town right in the Marlborough cow-commons;
A nine pound town right in Lancaster
£23 to be paid by Joseph How, and £8 to be paid by Abraham
Two pieces of meadow "lying on the northerly side of Asabeth River Commonly known by the Broad [pond?] & the hole at the wading place."6
