Mary Jolls
Mary Jolls, daughter of Thomas Jolls and Mehitable Ormsby, was born at Bristol, Bristol Co., Rhode Island, 7 May 1735.1 She died, probably at Adams, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, after 5 March 1800, when she was mentioned in a probate proceeding.2
Mary married (1) Hezekiah Luther Jr., son of Hezekiah Luther and Martha Gardner, at Warren, Bristol Co., Rhode Island, 17 March 1751;3,4 she married (2) Caleb Hill, son of Jonathan Hill and Elizabeth Hail, at Swansea, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, 29 July 1766.5,6
Her ancestry and date of birth could be questioned as that would make her not quite 16 when she married Hezekiah. However, the identification is proven by her mother's will, where she is mentioned as "Mary Hill, wife of Caleb Hill." That she was the widow of Hezekiah Luther is shown at a second accounting of his estate, 26 September 1768, where she is shown as "Mary Hill, late Mary Luther."
By 1783, she was almost 48 years old (47 years, 11 months) when Martha was born, conception having occurred about 9 months earlier. Not unheard of, but certainly unusual. The births of Mary and Martha appear to be well documented, and given that Mary was living when her mother wrote her will in 1790, there's no chance that Caleb had an unknown third wife.7,3,8,9
She was appointed guardian of their surviving Luther children (William, Hannah, Israel, Mehitable, Rebecca, & Hezekiah), 29 October 1763.10
