Francis Stoughton died quite young, sixteen years before the death of his father. It was also fifteen months before Elizabeth regained her throne, but there are no traces of papal leanings in Francis's will.
He gave his lands to his brother, Thomas, of St. Martin's at Canterbury, to manage until his only son should reach age twenty-one with the stipulation that he be kept in school.
When brother Thomas died in 1591, his will mentioned Francis' son Thomas as "my cousin, minister of the Word of God."1
