Edward was a clerk to the Prioress of Dartford Priory, but by the time he was 50, all Catholic monastic houses were disolved and the property confiscated by the Crown. During the next 15 years under the reigh of Queen Elizabeth, Edward's allegiance was transferred to the Protestant Church.
