Edward Stoughton, son of Thomas Stoughton and Margaret (…), was born 1495.1 He died 1573/74.1

Edward married (1) Helen Sherburn, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here);2 he married (2) Mary Exhurst, daughter of Richard Exhurst and Joan Roberts.1

Edward Stoughton lived at the Moat Farm at Ash, Kent, a parish adjoining sandwich, as a country gentleman. The Moat Farm was recorded as having been in the Stoughton family since the reign of Queen Elizabeth.

Edward was a clerk to the Prioress of Dartford Priory, but by the time he was 50, all Catholic monastic houses were disolved and the property confiscated by the Crown. During the next 15 years under the reigh of Queen Elizabeth, Edward's allegiance was transferred to the Protestant Church. He made no reference to any masses being said in his will as had his father and grandfather.

Interestingly, when his younger brother died before him, Edward was made executor. In Richard's will, he did ask that masses be said. Queen Mary (a Catholic) had ascended the throne, and for three years England was again a Catholic country.1
