David A. Smith, son of William Smith and Lavina (Levina) Shidler, was born at Sumner, Lawrence Co., Illinois, 30 April 1842.1,2,3,4,5,6 He died at Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co., Illinois, 12 January 1916, and was buried at Sand Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co., Illinois, 14 January 1916.7,6
David married Amy T. Smith, daughter of William James Smith and Sarah T. Hall, at Bridgeport, Lawrence Co., Illinois, 27 November 1867.8
He worked on the railroad in a section gang and had a crippled right hand. Every Sunday he would walk his five mile section of track to check for problems that would need fixing the next week. He drew his last pay the day he died.9

Death's visits to Mt. Carmel has of late been numerous, especially to the older residents of the city. Another visit was paid Wednesday night and David Smith, corner of Fourth and Vine Streets, answered the summons.
His death was due to pneumonia. He had been in ill health for some time, but he had been confined to his bed for only seven days.
Mr. Smith was born April 30, 1842 and at the time of his death was aged 73 years, 8 months and 12 days. He is survived by his widow and five children, two sons and three daughters, as follows: Henry and Fred Smith, Mrs. Mina Sperry, Mrs. Mary Watkins and Mrs. Emma R Blair.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning from the residence, 1103 West Fourth Street, conducted by Rev. Baker, and burial will be made in the Sand Hill cemetery.10
