Amy T. Smith, daughter of William James Smith and Sarah T. Hall, was born at Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, 9 September 1846.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 She died at Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co., Illinois, 11 December 1926, and was buried at Sand Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co., Illinois, 13 December 1926.7,8

Amy married David A. Smith, son of William Smith and Lavina (Levina) Shidler, at Bridgeport, Lawrence Co., Illinois, 27 November 1867.9

On the 1900 census, she was noted as the mother of 12 children with 5 still living.10

Her obituary reads:
Amy T. Smith was born at Louisville, Kentucky, September 9, 1846 and departed this life at Mt. Carmel, Illinois at the home of her daughter, Emma Blair, December 11, 1926, aged 80 years, 2 months and 2 days.

She leaves to mourn their loss, two daughters, Mrs. Emma Blair, of this city, and Mrs. Molly Wise, of East St. Louis, Illinois; two sons, Fred Smith of St. Francisville, Illi. and Henry of Bridgeport, Ill; sixteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one brother George W. Smith, a minister of Decatur; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Curry [Corrie], of Paris, Illinois; a number of nephews and nieces, and a host of friends.

She was united in marriage to David Smith at Bridgeport, Ill., April 27, 1869 [1867?]. To this union were born 12 children of whom eight preceded her in death.

Her husband died in 1915. After coming to this state with her parents in early childhood she resided near Sumner a number of years, later moving to this city with her husband and family, where she lived until death.

She confessed her faith in Christ about twenty five years ago at the Bethlehem Church in Lawrence County. Altho unable to take an active part in church work owing to her affliction, she remained faithful to her belief in Christ until death, often expressing her desire to join her loved ones in a better land, and as the close ofthe day would bring the shadows of night, she would say, "This may be the great day for me, when I shall cross over the Great Divide."

Characteristic of the early poneer, Mother Smith's early life was frought with hardships and struggles and many were the sacrifices she made to make the home comfortable and happy. No night was ever too dark or cold that she would not go to the aid of a friend in need and "Grandmother Smith" as she was called by her friends will be missed by many.

She often spoke of the devotion shown to her by Emma, who was her constant caretaker during the eight years of affliction and would admonish her other children in the words of the poet who said----
Live for those who love you
for those whose lives are true
For the heaven, that smiles above you
And the good that you may do

Funeral services were held on Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock from the residence on Oak street, Rev. Charles Russel of the Baptist church officiating.

The pall-bearers were Dewey Manion, David Huges, Cecil Smith, Clyde Smith, John Sperry, and Lawson Sperry. The flower-bearers were Ada Hornback, Edith Banks, Maggie Rose, Ethel Blair and Florice Fields.

A quartet from the Baptist church consisting of Eloise Hornbeck, Mabel Myers, Helen Norsworthy and Thelma Morgan sang.

Interment was made in the Sand Hill Cemetery.11
