William Gardner, son of Jesse Gardner and Rhoda Bunker, was born at Wayne Co., Indiana, 21 September 1828.1,2,3,4,5,6 He died at Penn, Jay Co., Indiana, 10 July 1891, aged 62y, 9m, 19d.7,2

William married Mahala Jane Hunt, daughter of Jesse Hunt and Catherine Pedrick, at Wayne Co. 19 April 1849.8,9

William Gardner was a farmer and stock raiser in section 24, Penn Township, Jay County, Indiana.

His early life was spent on the farm, and his father was a blacksmith. He began work in the shop and at age 14 had learned the trade. His Mother died as a child and he made his home with his father and at age 15, he began to take care of himself but he did work for his father until after his marriage. At age 12 (1840) he came to Jay County to visit his sister and liked it so moved there in 1850 with his wife and one child. He had 75 acres in Penn Township and he added to it until he owned 270 acres, all under cultivation with good building improvements. This farm has become famous and is now known as the "Twin Hills" Ranch. He was a Republican; a representative man of his township and held positions of trust and responsibility.9
