Winfield Scott Gardner, son of William Gardner and Mahala Jane Hunt, was born at Pennville, Jay Co., Indiana, 11 February 1852.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 He died at Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., California, 16 November 1924,2,1,9 and was buried at Grand Junction, Mesa Co., Colorado, 18 November 1924.2

Winfield married Amy Jane Johnson, daughter of Levi Johnson and Harriet Rigby, at Jay Co., Indiana, 26 September 1874.10,11,12,1

Winfield Scott Gardner was raised in Jay County, Indiana. After his marriage at age 22 he began his own farm. He first worked on rented land for two years, and then bought a place which he further developed and improved and which he eventually sold. He then bought another tract of land and also added to its improvements and further cultivation, for another two years.

In 1887, he moved to Lenora, Norton Co., Kansas and later also took a homestead in Sheridan Co., Kansas. He farmed there for seven years, bringing about marked changes in the appearance and fertility of the farm. He returned to Norton Co., bought land there and continued to buy land over a period of years until he had twenty-three hundred acres.

He moved to Colorado in 1906 on account of his health. He bought fifteen acres of orchard land and worked it for two years. He then sold that property and moved to Clifton, Mesa County., Colorado, where he purchased 16 acres of fruit land which he planted in orchards. His place was well improved with good buildings and all the accessories and conveniences of a model farm property. He personally gave his attention to the cultivation of the crops until 17 Feb 1919, when he rented his land and moved to a house in Clifton; a residence he had owned for ten years. He and others purchased one hundred lots of the town site and Mr. Gardner was the owner of much valuable town property, his holdings embracing one hundred town lots and several houses, and an office building. He was a stockholder in the Shellenberger Mercantile Company of Clifton and in a coal mine of Mesa Co. He was a member of the Farmers Equity Union and a stockholder in the Grand Junction Fruit Growers Association. He was also vice president of the Clifton State Bank.

A History of Colorado (1920-21) stated: "In politics Mr. Gardner maintains an independent course, voting according to the dictates of his judgment rather than by reason of party ties. In religion he is a Spiritualist, while the faith of his wife is that of the Christian church. His industry has been the measure of his success in a business way and he is still the owner of twenty-three hundred acres of excellent land in Kansas and considerable fruit land in Colorado. His prosperity is the merited reward of his persistency of purpose and well-directed energy and his record shows what can be accomplished through personal effort and the utilization of every opportunity.”

For his health, he and his wife moved to Long Beach, California in 1922 where he later died.

A search of the applicable land records in Colorado could prove to be very interesting. The twenties and thirties were not good for farmers and their land. The disposition of William Gardner's holdings might not have been very favorable.13
