Levi Johnson, son of Jesse Johnson and Frances Swallow, was born at Montgomery Co., Ohio, 28 February 1818.1,2,3,4 He died at Pennville, Jay Co., Indiana, 17 February 1900, aged 81 years, 11 months, 17 days,5,4 and was buried at Pennville.4

Levi married (1) Harriet Rigby, daughter of Seth Rigby and Delilah Gilbert, at Jay Co., Indiana, 2 March 1845;6,7 he married (2), as her 3rd husband, Elvira Walton, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), at Jay Co., 8 January 1876.8,9,10,11

Levi was a farmer and stockraiser in Jackson Township. Reared a farmer in his native county, he was given the benefits of a common-school education. In the winters of 1837 and 1838, Levi taught the first school in Penn Township in a log school-house. Each student paying $1.50 a term, and the teacher boarding around. In 1839, he taught in Jackson's first school. He continued to improve his farm in Jackson, making it one of the best in the township. Levi was one of the prominent men of his township, and served in several positions of trust and responsibility. He first was township clerk under the old law two terms, and was a justice of the peace twelve years. He has been assessor of his township five years, and in 1880 took the census. He was a member of the Christian church, to which he was devoted, working earnestly to promote the interests of his church. In politics, he was a Republican. He married his second wife 16 and a half years after his first wife died. The following was written while they were still alive: "Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have one of the pleasantest homes in the township, and their hospitable and cordial manners has gained for them many friends who are always sure of a welcome. Their benevolence and kindness to the poor has endeared their names to many, who will ever remembered with gratitude the favors received at their fireside."9

He settled the estate of his father-in-law, Seth Rigby, appearing at probate court several times between 1851 and 1855 when the final distribution was made.12
