Dickinson Garten, son of Griffith Garten and Hannah Miller, was born at Monroe Co., Virginia, 28 December 1803.1 He died at Hire, McDonough Co., Illinois, 30 November 1851, and was buried at South Cemetery, Hire, McDonough Co., Illinois.1

Dickinson married (1) Clara Green, daughter of Jesse Green and Clara Bigby, at Monroe Co., 14 March 1825;2,3,4 he married (2) Tabitha Bagby, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), at Hancock Co., Illinois, 27 July 1837.5,1

The three younger girls shown here are likely to be daughters of Dickinson and Tabitha. They appear in the marriage records of McDonough County, and the Dickinson Girton family was the only one of that name in the area. Unfortunately, he and his family appear to have eluded the census taker in 1850. Also, the 1855 Illinois census is not an "every name census," but it does show Tabitha as head of household with 1 male aged 10-20 (Thomas), 4 females aged 10-20, and 1 female aged 30-40 (probably herself). The fourth female aged 10-20 is unknown at present.6
