William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), married Joan of Kent "Fair Maid of Kent," Princess of Wales, daughter of Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent and Margaret Wake, Countess of Kent, Lady Wake, about 21 January 1340/41, while her first husband was absent in Prussia;1 the marriage was later declared null and void by Cardinal d'Albi in 1349.1
