Sir Richard de Clare, Knt., 6th Earl of Gloucester
Sir Richard de Clare, Knt., 6th Earl of Gloucester, son of Sir Gilbert de Clare, Knt., 4th Earl of Hertford and Isabel Marshal, was born 4 August 1222.1 He died at Ashenfield, Waltham, Kent, England, 15 July 1262.1
Richard married (1) Margaret de Burgh, daughter of Sir Hubert de Burgh, Knt., Earl of Kent and Margaret of Scotland, before September 1236;1 he married (2) Maud de Lacy, daughter of John de Lacy and Margaret de Quincy, about 25 January 1237/38.1
After his death, it seems everyone wanted a piece of him: On the Monday following his death, his body was taken to the Cathedral Church of Christ at Canterbury, where his entrails were buried before the altar of St Edward the Confessor; the body was next taken to the Collegiate Church of Tonbridge, Kent, where the heart was buried; the body (or what remained of it) was then taken to Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire where it was buried at the right hand of his father.1
