William I "the Lion," King of Scotland
William I "the Lion," King of Scotland, son of Henry of Scotland, Earl of Northumberland and Ada de Warenne, Countess of Northumberland, was born in 1143.1 He died at Stirling Castle, Stirling, Scotland, 4 December 1214,1 and was buried before the high altar in the church of Arbroath Abbey, Angus, Scotland.1
William married Ermengarde de Beaumont, daughter of Richard de Beaumont and Lucy de l'Aigle, at Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England, 5 September 1186.1
William also had at least one illigitmate daughter with an unnamed daughter of Richard Avenal, and eight other children by various unknown mistresses. At SCOTLAND 4, RA does not give the Avenal name (father or daughter) at all, though the last name is given in the lineage heading at ROOS 5.2,3
