Sir John of Gaunt, K.G., Duke of Lancaster, etc., son of Edward III, King of England and Philippa Hainault, was born at St Bavon's Abbey, Ghent, Flanders, Belgium, March 1340.1,2 He died at Leicester Castle, Leicestershire, England, 3 February 1398/99,3,2 and was buried with his 1st wife at St Paul's Cathedral, London, England, 16 March 1398/99.3

John married (1) Blanche of Lancaster, daughter of Sir Henry of Lancaster, K.G., Earl of Lancaster and Isabel de Beaumont, 13 May 1359;1 he married (2) Constance of Castile-León, daughter of Pedro I "the Cruel," King of Castile and María de Padilla, before 29 September 1371;4 he married (3), as her 2nd husband, Katherine de Roet, daughter of Gilles dit Paonet de Roet, at Lincoln Cathredral, Lincolnshire, England, 13 January 1395/96.3,2

He also had an early mistress, Mary de Saint Hilaire, by whom he had one daughter.1
