Moses Ely, son of Moses Ely and Rebekah Cook, was born at Livingston, Essex Co., New Jersey, 21 February 1790.1 He died 14 September 1842.1

Moses married Eliza Coleman, daughter of John Coleman and Bathsheba Goldsmith, in 1813.1

Moses "was a Justice of the Peace in New Windsor, near Newburgh, and was generally known as Judge Ely. He was a warm-hearted man, and it is related of him that when he performed the marriage ceremony for persons whose means were too limited to permit them to give their friends a wedding feast he would provide cake and wine for the entertainment at his own expense."2
