Ellis Cook, son of Abiel Cook and Frances (…), was born at Southampton, Suffolk Co., New York, say 1699.1,2 He died in 1756, reportedly on the way to Ft. Oswego, Oswego Co., New York.3,2
Ellis married (1) Temperence (…), before 1723;4,5,2 he married (2) Mary Williams, daughter of John Williams, after 1723.6,2

15 Jun 1741, Josiah Pierson, Stephen Herrick and Abraham Halsey, commissioners or surveyors reported what they had sold to various townsmen. Among those purchasers was Ellis Cook, “22 poles of land lying on ye south side of his home lot half a pole wide where joins to Thomas Sanfords home lot and from thence it is to be run as far east as ye west end of Cookes house and no further and there to a pole and a half wide price is 19s 3d.”8
19 Nov 1745 Ellis draws ¼ of Lot #16.9
16 Mar 1747, Ellis sells to Elias Petty, weaver, “my home lot at water mill, bounded N & W by highway, S by water, E by land of Abram Halsey” for £180 10s.10
Three months after selling the Southampton property, on 22 June 1747 in Hanover, New Jersey, Ellis Cook, husbandman, bought from Cornelius Drake, a farm of 110 acres, lying on the south side of the road to the old "iron works," and extending from the Passaic river "62 chains westerly." This lot had been sold by James and Sarah Ball, and it was "bounded on the south by John Canfield and meadow belonging to Caleb Ball, and on the west by Mrs. Wheeler's land."
In a paper dated 12 Mar 1751, John Williams of Hanover, cordwainer, gives to his daughter Mary Cook, wife of Ellis Cook, a tract of land estimated at 40 acres, with dwelling upon it, after the decease of himself and wife. In case of her death it was to be given to her five sons, "the eldest named Williams to have a double portion of the same." This lot was "bounded east by Passaick River, west by the Lane or Road, north by John Balls land, and south by Henry Burnet" Witness, Justus Burnet, William Dixon.
Reportedly, the drafting or enlistment of Epaphras and John into the Jersey Regiment gave Ellis cause to prepare his will. This was very timely as he died while accompanying his sons under Colonel Schuyler on the way to Ft. Oswego. Cause of death is unknown, as is the place of burial. There was no inventory. Williams later sold his share of the estate to his younger brother, Ellis.
Contemporary records of these three events have not been located.6
Ellis Cook left a will dated at Morris Co., New Jersey, 11 March 1756, and proved there 31 August:

In the name of God Amen. This eleventh day of March one thousand seven hundred and fifty six I Ellis Cook of Hanover in the County of Morris and Province of New Jersey yeoman being of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God: Therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that is appointed for all men once to Die Do make and ordain this my last will and Testament that is to Say
Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hands of god that gave it and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be Buried in descent Christian Burial at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the might power of god and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form
First I order that all my just and lawful debts be duly paid and discharged
In primmis I give to my two oldest sons Williams and Ellis the whole of all my Estate Plantation and movable Estate to be equally divided between them.
Item I give and bequeath to my other three Sons Jonath, Epaphras and John the Sum of Ten pounds apiece to be paid to each of them when ye arrive to the age of Twenty one years to each of them as they come of age by my two above sons Williams and Ellis each of them to pay an equal part of the above sums
likewise I will and order that my two said sons Williams and Elllis do Pay all my just and lawful Debts
Likewise I do hereby constitute appoint and ordain my two abovesaid sons Williams and Ellis the Executors of this my last will and Testament all and singular my lands messuages and tenements by them freely to be possessed and enjoyed
And I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disavow all and every other former Testaments Wills Legacies and bequests and Executions by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed ratifying & confirming this and no other to be my last will and Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written
Be it Remembered that on the thirty first day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty six Jonathan Squier and William Dixon two of the witnesses personally appeared before me Ural Ogden duly authorized to Prove Wills and qualify Executors in Essex and Morris Counties and they being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists did depose that they were present and saw Ellis Cook the Testator within named Sign and Seal the within written Instrument and heard him publish pronounce and Declare the Same to be his last Wil and Testament & that at the doing thereof the said Testator was of sound mind and memory to the best of their knowledge and understanding and that at the same time Tho. Biglow was present and signed as a Witness in the Testator's presence. Ural Ogden
Be it also remembered that at the same time Williams Cook and Ellis Cook the Executors within named personnally came before me and were sworn to the due execution and performance of the within will according to law. Ural Ogden
Probate granted by Gov Belcher in the usual form Dated the same 31 August 1756.11
