Elbert Anderson, son of Pieter Anderson and Cornelia Holmes, was born probably shortly before his baptism at the Dutch Reformed Church, New York, New York Co., New York, 4 December 1745.1,2 He died at Bowery, New York, New York Co., New York, 4 August 1813, of cancer at age 68,3 and was buried at the Methodist Cemetery on 2nd Street, New York, New York Co., New York.3
Elbert married Elizabeth Pierce at New York, New York Co., New York, 22 October 1767.4,5
In 1790, his household was probably the one enumerated in the New York City North Ward, New York Co., New York, with 4 free white males over 16, 4 under 16, 5 free white females, and 3 slaves.6
Elbert left a will dated at New York, 3 March 1813, and proved 13 Aug 1813:
In the name of God Amen, I Elbert Anderson of the City of New York in the State of New York Gentleman being weak in health but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding Do make ordain publish and declare this my last will and testament as follows that is to say
First and principally I commend my Soul to almighty God my creator in the hope of everlasting happiness through the meritorious intercession of Jesus Christ my redeemer, and my body I commit to the earth from which it was formed; to be interred in a decent and Christian like manner by my Executors herein after named.
Secondly It is my will and I do order and direct that my Real Estate in the State of New Jersey be sold by my Executors herein after named at auction at the Foutirre Coffee House in the City of New York, after previous and sufficient notice within a reasonable and Convenient time after my decease and that they execute to the purchaser or purchasers thereof good and sufficient Deeds and Conveyances in the Said in fee simple for the same
and that previous to such Sale that part of my farm called the Bergen Woods Farm lying on the Easterly side of the Hackensack Turnpike be laid out in Lots or parcels of five acres each as nearly as may be, and that it be sold in such divisions as last mentioned.
And also that my five acre log of meadow Land adjoining Captain Benson’s Lot be sold separately,
and also that my farm near Fort Sec be divided into Lots or parcels of five acres each as nearly as may be, the division lines to be run from the river up to the Brow of the Hill in the same direction with the division line between my said farm last mentioned and that of Mr. Sow adjoining such division to be made so as not to interfere with the house and barn, and that the same be sold in such divisions as are last mentioned
And that my said Executors do also sell and dispose of my personal Estate in the State of New Jersey, and also my personal Estate in the City of New York, except my Bank Stock and such other part there of as is hereinafter otherwise disposed of, Together with my Schooner called The Experiment, and out of the monies arising from such Sales it is my will and I do order and direct that my said Executors do pay all my just debts and funeral and Testamentary expenses.
Thirdly, out of the remainder of the proceeds fo the said Sales I give devise and bequeath unto my youngest daughter Judia Anderson the sum of Five hundred dollars over and above the share herein after devised to her.
Fourthly, it is my will and I do order and direct that the remainder of the proceeds of the said Sales be put out at interest by my said Executors on good landed security and that the same be disposed of by them in manner hereinafter directed.
Fifthly I give devise and bequeath unto my wife Elizabeth Anderson a Mahogany side board with Closets, a Card Table lined with Green Cloth, a Mahogany dining Table, a Bed and Bedding a Set of Field Bed and Window Curtains, six bed quilts, five pair of Sheets, four old fashioned Silver Tea spoons, Six Silver Table spoons, one Silver Soup Spoon, one Silver Tea Pot, one Silver Milk Pot, one Solver Sugar dish, twelve new Silver Tea spoons, all the Knives and forks and Tea China now in my possession two floor carpets, Ten Windsor Chairs an easy Chair two large looking Glasses two pair of Brass Andirons and two pair of Shovel and Tongs.
Sixthly It is my will and I do order and direct that my said Executors do let out to such persons and on such terms and for such period and periods of time as to them shall appear most advantageous during the term of fifteen years after my decease my Houses and Real Estate in the City of New York and that out of the rents to be received by them for the same they do pay and discharge all expenses for Insuring and keeping the same in repair and the remainder of the said rents I give devise and bequeath as follows, that is to say
to my wife I give devise and bequeath the one third part thereof the payment whereof together with the forgoing bequest to her of the articles therein mentioned and her acceptance of the same is to be in lieu and satisfaction of and a Bar against her claim and right of Dower and third of and in my Real Estate.
The remaining two thirds there of together with the interest of the proceeds of the said Sales above directed to be made and the interest of my Bank Stock to be divided and paid as follows that is to say,
one Sixth part thereof I give and direct to be paid to my daughter Cornelia Mitchell Wife of the reverend Edward Mitchell of the City of New York,
one Sixth part thereof I give and direct to be paid to my daughter Mary Young wife of William B. B. Young of the said City accountant,
one Sixth part there of I give and direct to be paid as follows that is to say
three fourths thereof I give to my son James Anderson
and the other fourth part thereof I give to his children and Lawful Heirs.
One sixth part thereof I give and direct to be paid to my son Elbert Anderson Junior,
one Sixth part thereof I give and direct to be paid to my daughter Eliza Cowdrey wife of Samuel Cowdrey of the said City Counselor at law,
and the remaining sixth part thereof I give and direct to be paid to my said daughter Judia Anderson
The same to be divided and paid as above mentioned from time to time as my said Executors shall receive the same and until the death of my said wife, and from and after the death of my said wife, the third part of the rents above allotted and bequeathed to her to be divided and paid to my said children, and the children and lawful heirs of my said son James from time to time as the same shall be received by my said Executors and in the same proportions as is above directed.
Seventhly. It is my will and I do order and direct that the respective shares and proportions of my Estate in and by this my will give and bequeathed to my said children shall be and remain to them severally and respectively and to their and each of their Heirs Executors Administrators and assigns except as herein otherwise provided and directed
Eighthly. It is my will and I do order and direct that at the end and expiration of the said period or term of Fifteen years my said Executors do sell and dispose of all my Real Estate in the said City of New York on the most advantageous Terms and that they execute to the purchaser or purchasers thereof good and sufficient Deeds and Conveyances in the Said in fee Simple for the same and the proceeds thereof I give devise and bequeath unto and among my said children in manner and form following that is to say
to my said daughter Cornelia Mitchell I give devise and bequeath the one equal sixth part thereof.
To my said daughter Mary Young I give devise and bequeath the one Sixth part thereof to be paid to her or put out at interest by my said Executors as her Trustees as she shall require and in every respect as though she were a femmesole and in case she shall require it to be put out at interest as aforesaid that the interest of her said share shall be paid to her by my said executors from time to time as they shall receive the same and if the same shall be remaining out at Interest or the same shall not have been paid by my said executors at the time of her decease that then it is my will and I do order and direct that the same be equally divided to and amongst her children and lawful heirs.
To my said son James Anderson I give and bequeath three fourths of the interest of one Sixth part there of the fourth part of the interest thereof I give and bequeath to his children and lawful Heirs and for the purpose of Carrying the above devise as to him and his said children and lawful Heirs into effect I order and direct that the said Sixth part thereof be put out at interest by my said Executors and that the interest thereof be paid to him and his said Children and lawful Heirs in the proportions above directed by my said Executors from time to time as they shall receive the same and at the death of my said son James the said Sixth part thereof to be divided equally to and amongst his children and lawful Heirs.
To my said son Elbert Anderson Junior I give devise and bequeath the one equal Sixth part thereof
to my said daughter Eliza Cowdrey I give devise and bequeath the one equal Sixth part thereof and
to my said daughter Judia Anderson I give devise and bequeath the remaining Sixth part thereof.
It is also my will and I do order and direct that the monies arising from the Sales directed to be made in and by the second clause of this my will together with the residue of my Estate of whatever it may consist be divided amongst my said Children and the Children and lawful Heirs of my said son James and the end and expiration of the said period of fifteen years in the same manner and proportions as above directed in this clause of my said will.
In case my said wife should be living at the time last mentioned I direct that my said Executors do commute with her out the monies to received by them on the sale of my said Real Estate in the City of New York for the share and proportion herein before devised to her and that upon such Commutation they obtain from her a release of her claim and that they divide the residue in the manner and proportions above directed to and amongst my said children and the children and lawful Heirs of my said son James or that they make such other just and equitable arrangement with my said wife as to them shall seem most advantageous and satisfactory to my family.
Ninthly, It is my will and direction that my said Executors do not take any Legal measure for the Collection of the money due me on a Bond and Mortgage executed to me by John Cuyler and Stephen Cuyler during the life of my said wife.
Tenthly and Lastly. I nominate Constitute and appoint my said son Elbert Anderson Junior and my sons in Law Edward Mitchell and Samuel Cowdrey and the Survivors and survivor of them to be the Executors of this my last will and Testament hereby revoking annulling and disallowing all and every other former will and wills by me at anytime heretofore made.

City and County of New York Be it remembered that on the nineteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirteen personally came and appeared before me Silvanus Miller Surrogate of said County William Seaman of the City of New York Attorney at Law who being duly sworn on his oath declared that he saw Elbert Anderson Sign and Seal an Instrument in writing purporting to be the will of the said Elbert Anderson bearing date of the third day of March in the year last aforesaid the preceding whereof is a true copy and heard him publish and declare the same as and for his last will and testament that at he time there of he the said Elbert Anderson was of sound disposing mind and memory to the best of the knowledge and belief of this deponent that his name subscribed as a witness to the said will is of his own proper hand writing which he subscribed as a witness thereto in the presence of the testator and that the saw Burnell Brown and Conrad Jordan the other witness subscribe their names as witnesses thereto in the presence of the Testator.7
