Anthony Stoughton, son of Sir Lawrence Stoughton, Knt., M.P. and Rose Ive, was born at Stoughton, Surrey, England, 4 July 1598.1,2,3 He died at Stoughton, 14 January 1643/44.1,2,3
Anthony married Agnes Purse, daughter of Robert Purse and Judith Hammond, at Ockham, Surrey, England, 10 February 1628/29.1,2,4
Anthony Stoughton was an ensign in the Parliamentary Army. In 1643, "when about approaching his end, he entrusted his daughter, Rose, to his kinsman Captain Israel Stoughton of Dorchester, Massachusetts who had gone home about merchandise, to bring to New England out of the perils of the civil war then raging in England."
None of the various accounts or pedigrees of the Stoughton families show Anthony and Israel Stoughton as in some way related. Most likely, when Horatio Otis wrote his 1851 account, the rationale was simply "the name's the same." In his account, Ralph Stoughton makes no attempt to connect the two men. At present it is mere speculation to attempt to answer how Anthony came to know Israel well enough to entrust his daughter to him, though it is quite possible they were related in some fashion for which evidence has not yet been found.
His son noted that his father was a "Puritan and strict liver."2,5
