Mary Ella Payne
Mary Ella Payne, daughter of Charles Calvin Payne and Lydia Mahala Stafford, was born at Farmington, Ontario Co., New York, 2 February 1862.1,2,3 She died at Hollis, Cloud Co., Kansas, 28 February 1900,4,5 and was buried at Hollis Cemetery, Hollis, Cloud Co., Kansas.6
Mary married Euclid Roland Price, son of James Voss Price and Frances Jane Weathers, at Republic Co., Kansas, 2 March 1879.7,8
No known document names the wife of Euclid Price, Mary Ella (Payne) Price as a daughter of Charles and Lydia (Stafford) Payne. However, a compilation of evidence makes it abundantly clear.
Before marriage, three census records show her as "Ella Payne," daughter of Charles Payne and his wife Lydia with compatible ages of 3, 7, and 13. The 1865 and 1875 New York state censuses specifically name the relationship. The Payne family moved to Republic Co., KS (just north of Cloud Co.), between 1875 and the probate of the estate of Lydia's father, Barton Stafford, in 1878.
The marriage license of March 1879 shows her as Mary E. Payne of compatible age (17).
A year after marriage, her census record shows her as "Mary," wife of Euclid Price, age 18, again an age compatible with the previous censuses and her marriage license. In 1885, she is Mary E. Price, age 23, again compatible with all previous documents.
Euclid Price's civil war pension questionnaire shows her as Mary Ella Price/Payne, with the same date of marriage as the marriage license, and gives her date of death.
Finally, her grave stone photo (no surname) shows her birth year as 1862, compatible with all previous censuses and the marriage license. While not shown in the photo, she and Euclid are buried next to one another.
There are other Payne families in or near Republic Co., KS in 1880, but only Charles and Lydia were both born in New York, compatible with the record for Mary E. Price.
With no incompatible or conflicting records, compatible ages across five census records and the marriage license, and being named Ella, Mary, Mary E., or Mary Ella in each of those records and Euclid's pension file, clearly Mary Ella (Payne) Price, wife of Euclid Price, is the daughter of Charles and Lydia Payne, born in 1862 in New York as shown in the census records of 1865, 1870, and 1875.9,3,10,11,12,13,7,14,15
