Samuel Cowdrey, Esq., son of Jonathan Cowdrey and Sally Hoyt, was born at Long Ridge, Connecticut, 11 January 1782.1 He died at New York, New York Co., New York, 18 August 1843.2 He was first buried at Marble Cemetery on 2nd Street, New York, New York Co., New York,3 and later reinterred at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, 6 November 1847.3

Samuel married Eliza Anderson, daughter of Elbert Anderson and Elizabeth Pierce, at New York City, New York Co., New York, 16 February 1803.4,5

Samuel Cowdrey had the benefit of a good education, became an eminent lawyer and was elected Alderman several times. When the completion of the Erie Canal was celebrated, he was chosen to represent the City of New York and welcome the guests. He was a friend of LaFayette and it was through this friendship that his son, Peter Anderson Cowdrey, took such a prominent part in his visit in 1824.2
