Samuel Knapp

Samuel Knapp, son of Caleb Knapp and Hannah Smith, was born at Stamford, Connecticut, in 1668.1 He died at Danbury, Connecticut, in 1739.1
Samuel married (1) Hannah Bushnell, daughter of Francis Bushnell and Hannah Seymour, at Norwalk, Connecticut, 1696;2,3 he married (2) Phoebe Lockwood, whose ancestry is unknown (or not traced here), before June 1726.4
Two Samuel Knapps lived in Danbury at the same time. Both died in 1739. This makes the tracing of their life activities difficult and confusing.
Our Samuel was known as Lieut. Samuel. He was an Ensign in the Train Band in 1713. Lieut. in the Train Band and Representative in the Assembly in 1716-1721-1722. He was a weaver by occupation. He moved to Danbury before 1700, probably as early as 1685 as he was among the first eight families that settled there. The Allegheny County, Pa. History, p. 785, says of Samuel Knapp: "Tradition says that he was commissioned by the King of England to locate and survey the Town of Danbury and settle thereon a certain number of families in a certain length of time, and if he did this, he was to have a certain tract of land for his services." This cannot be verified for the Danbury records were destroyed in the burning of Danbury by the British in 1777. Various accounts differ. He was in Danbury after 1691 and as early as 1697 and probably earlier, for Thomas Lawrence of Stamford, in his will of 26 July 1691 calls him "son-in-law Samuel Knap." He was really his stepson and not his son-in-law. Perhaps he lived in Stamford at that time. Fairfield Probate Records, Vol. 1689-1701, page 172, says: "Samuel Knap of Danbury appeared in Court this 2 of Nov. and gave oath to the truth of the above inventory of the estate of Francis Bushnell of Danbury, Deceased Oct. 1697." The Conn. General Assembly held in New Haven confirmed him as Ensign of the Train Band in Oct 1713. He was promoted to Lieut. in May 1716, by the General Assembly held at Hartford. He was a Deputy to the General Assembly held at Hartford 10 May 1716 and 11 May 1721.2
